Episode 48: Centro Nakkal Argentina
Centro Nakkal is an ecovillage in Cañuelas 80 km from Buenos Aires in Argentina.
Built on sustainable principles and off the grid, the Centro Nakkal community have created a cluster of small cabins, a large community building with kitchen and two large family homes. The cabins, which were the first structures on the site, are essentially what we would know in the UK as benders. The walls are made from canvas which was donated to the newly-formed group by a telephone company; the roof is a straw-like local thatch and the structure has been reinforced with cob.
The family homes are built mostly with cob, which they prefer as a material because all of the community can get involved in the build - even the children, who constructed their own playhouse using this versatile mix of earth, clay and straw.
